Using Hydroponics to Combat the Effects of Global Warming on Agriculture
Global warming research has made great strides in projecting possible outcomes based on increases in global temperatures. Agriculture and food production are intimately tied to this phenomenon, and current farming systems will likely need modifications in order to continue feeding the world.

Temperature plays a large role in plant growth. When temperatures become too hot, plants yield less. Increased temperatures cause changes in plant diversity in a region, which also impacts the animals, plants and insects that rely on the plants. Changes in insect predators and prey can mean the difference between certain crops living or dying, and temperature's impact cannot be overlooked.

Carbon dioxide increases can have an affect on plants as well. Crops have been shown in growing conditions with high CO2 levels to be less able to take in nitrogen. This means that these crops will provide less nutrition than similar crops grown at current CO2 levels.

Changes in rainfall might also occur with global warming. Some areas of the planet would be faced with increased precipitation, which can lead to erosion of topsoil and plant nutrition. In areas with both increased rain and temperature, fungal diseases and molds abound, which can have a destructive impact on crops and plant growth.

Hydroponic gardening and other forms of indoor gardening offer a viable option that may help combat the effects of global warming on agriculture. Hydroponics can be successful in areas where the soil nutrients have been rendered useless for crop production and plant growth. Hydroponic gardening uses no soil. With this type of indoor gardening, fewer pesticides are needed because soil-borne diseases are eliminated, and less water is usually needed for hydroponic crops than for crops grown outdoors in soil.

With indoor gardening, plants are grown in either nutrient solution or in a growing medium such as rockwool, coir, perlite or vermiculite. For both types of indoor gardening, the roots of the plant sit in the nutrient solution or the growing medium, and they feed on the nutrient solution by their roots. When plants are grown in nutrient solution, the liquid must be aerated so that plant roots receive enough oxygen. For indoor gardening the grower selects a nutrient solution based on the individual requirements of each specific plant grown. Plants can also be grown aeroponically, when the plants are suspended and the roots are misted or sprayed with nutrient solution. The plants are grown under bright grow lights, which supply the light necessary for photosynthesis and plant growth.
