Hydroponics Leads the Green Food Revolution
Hydroponic gardening has risen to the surface as an underestimated ally during this time when the United States, as a global leader, is considering new ways of conserving energy and looking to petroleum alternatives for fuel. Indoor gardening can play a vital role in todays world, where the greening of food production is of vital concern. Along with an increased interest in the Slow Food Movement, and purchasing locally produced foods has come a resurgence in indoor gardening. The concerns raised over pesticide use in foods typically found in local supermarkets across the country have people looking for healthier alternatives, closer to home such as hydroponic gardening.

This is not a phenomenon that is unique to the United States, however. Hydroponic gardening has had an effect on people worldwide as they are looking for ways to produce food in an environment that is quickly degrading and needs to be protected. The solution of indoor gardening enables food production in less than hospitable climates and geographical regions around the world. Hydroponic gardening offers food production alternatives when certain regions of the world, due to changes in climate, have been rendered incapable of producing enough if any food for the inhabitants. Drought, desertification, and even over farming all leave the soil depleted and unproductive for plant growth.

Hydroponics Arrives on the Scene

Hydroponic gardening, or gardening without soil, makes it possible to grow nutritious food in what would otherwise be less than ideal circumstances. Plants can be grown in either nutrient solution or a growing medium, with vital nutrients provided through the growing media and taken up by the plants' roots. Grow lights are used to promote photosynthesis in the plants, and can be adjusted to meet the specific needs of plants at every stage of their lives. Because indoor growing conditions are ideal, and plants are not plagued by soil-borne diseases that are common in more traditional growing situations, plants grown using a hydroponic system achieve maturity more quickly than soil-grown plants do, so productivity is tremendously increased by hydroponic gardening.

Local foods grown with hydroponics not only taste great but they also help cut back on the amount of petroleum fuels commonly used to produce soil-grown foods. Petroleum-based pesticides and fertilizers are commonly used to increase the productivity of commercially grown foods, after which more fuel is used to transport the foods around the country and the world to supply supermarkets. Hydroponic gardening provides a green alternative that greatly reduces the use of petroleum. Organically grown food can also be grown using a hydroponic system. There are a large variety of organic plant nutrients to choose from when you decide to start organic indoor gardening. In every town and even in every home it only requires a minimal amount of space to devote to indoor gardening. Hydroponic gardening produces nutrient-dense produce that is available locally, even when the natural climate is not conducive to food production.
